Mr. Cordes has wired us under date of 9th instant

that the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation has

contracted a loan of Eleven Million Dollars with the

Chinese Company that undertakes the construction of the

railway from Canton to the northern frontier of the

Province of Kwantung.

we should be obliged to you if you would give us

an information as to whether this is correct. Being a party

to the agreement on the Hukuang Railways we are, by virtue

of Article 19, interested in any extension that the railway

lines enumerated in Article 2 may undergo and we have always

been under the impression that especially the extension from

the South of the Province of Hunan to Canton, being by far

the most natural extension, would fall under the terms of

the agreement.
